I-80 in Illinois

I-80, is easy going until you near Chicago; then you'll wonder where all the cars and trucks are coming from. At exit 155, the I-80 Freeway becomes a TOLLWAY and exiting for any reason becomes a lot less easy. But there is a solution to the congestion. WIth the price of gasoline hovering around $3 a gallon, the extra hundred miles will cost you a little more than staying on I-80 and paying all the tolls. However, it is frequently less time consuming and far less traumatic.
If, in Davenport IA, you took I-280 around the south end of the 'Quad Cities' (recommended), it is joined by I-74 just after you passed Rock Island. Then, when you encounter the I-80 interchange 10 miles later, STAY ON I-74, - do NOT take I-80!
I-74 heads southeast, through Peoria, Bloomington and Champaign, then heads east to Indianapolis. In Indianapolis, you'll follow the I-465 belt highway around the southern environs of the city, following it all the way around to the east side where you will get on I-70 (eastbound, of course).

I-70 allows you to cruise over the rolling hills of central Indiana and Ohio to Columbus OH. There, take the I-270 beltway NORTH, around the northwest corner of town to  I-71 and follow I-71 north to the I-76 interchange at exit 209. Get on I-76 and follow it to exit 60. Here you meet I-80 (which has been toll all the way through Indiana and Ohio). Now you get on I-80. Strange as it may seem, at this point I-80 is freeway again and I-76 now becomes a tollway.
We have been both ways, many times in both directions, and strongly prefer the southern route via I-70, 71 and 76. But getting around the tolls (which are rather expensive) does not match the extra cost of motor fuel (now about 4 to 5 times more expensive). This, however, has not been as important as avoiding the very heavy traffic in the Chicago area. When they have an accident, you sit and wait, and wait, or maybe crawl a little bit. It certainly doesn't add to your enjoyment.
